Two Chinese doctors participated in a four-day medical camp and along with their Pakistani counterparts successfully operated upon 54 patients of cleft lip and palate - one of the most common types of cranio-maxillofacial birth anomalies. Dr Ma Lian and Dr Zhou Zia of Beijing Cleft Hospital specially travelled to Islamabad while Islamabad Cleft Lip and Palate Association arranged the visit.

At the reception hosted in honour of Chinese doctors, it was announced that the two sides will cooperate with each other to set up Cleft Lip and Palate Centre to provide free of cost treatment to deserving patients on regular basis. The team of doctors which treated the patients voluntarily pledged to continue keeping in touch with the patients. The reception was addressed among others by Association's President M Aftab, Farhat Akhtar Rehman, Professor Dr Muhammad Azhar, Dr Akbar Niazi and Dr Zahida who explained the complexity of the disease and treatment process.

They eulogised the services of Chinese doctors who did a marvellous job by operating upon more than 50 patients in a record time of just four days. Dr Ma Lian, one of the Chinese doctors said she was keen to come to Pakistan to provide medical services to their Pakistani brothers and sisters. She spoke of high of Sino-Pak friendship and said they were highly impressed by the warm-hearted reception given to them.

Association's President M Aftab said his organisation had been providing free medical facilities to the poor families since 2004 with the support of families, friends and well wishers. According to him, all the donations for this noble cause are exempted from tax.

Professor Farhat said ICLAPA was a group of volunteers which rely on donors to bring hope and happiness in the lives of people, for whom it is financially difficult to get their children treated. She said they needed a piece of land, a team of young volunteers and necessary funding to continue their noble mission that was initiated by his late husband Dr Akhtar Rehman.
